Berlin-Migrant..

Germany is actively pursuing policies to encourage or mandate the return of Syrian nationals, following political changes in Syria and a shift toward stricter migration controls.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Berlin hopes around 80% of the nearly 1 million Syrians currently living in Germany will return to Syria over a three-year period, working alongside Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

The initial focus of removals and non-renewals targets individuals without valid residence rights, particularly those with criminal records.

Following the collapse of the Assad regime, Germany moved to resume targeted deportations—particularly for criminal offenders—while officials in Damascus have cautioned that the country's
fragile infrastructure needs more time to absorb large numbers of returnees.
