More or less

NEW YORK -Infectious disease experts are weighing the need for booster shots of the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna mRNA-based vaccines for Americans who received Johnson & Johnson's one-dose vaccine due to the increasing prevalence of the more contagious Delta coronavirus variant

A few say they have already done so themselves, even without published data on whether combining two different vaccines is safe and effective or backing from U.S. health regulators. Canada and some European countries are already allowing people to get two different COVID-19 shots.

The debate centers on concerns over how protective the J&J shot is against the Delta variant first detected in India and now circulating widely in many countries.

Delta, which has also been associated with more severe disease, could quickly become the dominant version of the virus in the United States, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky has warned.

There is no substantial data showing how protective the J&J vaccine is against the new variant. However, UK studies show that two doses of either the Pfizer/BioNTech or AstraZeneca vaccines are significantly more protective against the variant than one.

New York City’s Board of Election withdrew data it had released earlier purporting to be the first results of the city’s new ranked choice voting system.

The Board of Elections tweeted that it was aware of “a discrepancy” in its report on ranked choice voting results. It didn’t explain what that discrepancy was or whether it potentially had any impact on the reported results.

The confusion was a black mark on New York City’s first major foray into ranked choice voting, and seemed to confirm worries beforehand that the Board of Election, which operates independently from City Hall, was unprepared for the election.

In an earlier statement before the Board of Elections released theirs, Adams' team initially wrote: "The vote total just released by the Board of Elections is 100,000-plus more than the total announced on election night, raising serious questions.

This is a shameful story for this City, and the Country as well. Just a thought

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned Bill Cosby’s 2018 sexual assault conviction on Wednesday and barred him from being retried, a decision that will pave the way for his release from prison and upend the first high-profile celebrity conviction of the #MeToo era.

The divided court ruled that the 83-year-old comedian — who has served more than two years of a three-to-10-year sentence — had been denied a fair trial, citing an agreement struck with a previous prosecutor that the justices said barred Cosby from ever being charged with the 2004 assault of Temple University employee Andrea Constand.

Justice David N. Wecht, writing for the majority, said Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele was legally bound by that decade-old promise and therefore should not have brought charges when new evidence surfaced in 2015.

Vacating Cosby’s conviction, Wecht said, “is the only remedy that comports with society’s reasonable expectations of its elected prosecutors and our criminal justice system.”

Robust...

The vaccines developed by Pfizer with German partner BioNTech and Moderna using mRNA technology may offer protection against the coronavirus-borne illness COVID-19 for years, according to a new study published Monday.

The study, conducted by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, suggests that people vaccinated with those shots may not need boosters, as long as the virus does not mutate or give rise to new vaccine-resistant variants. It also found that people who have recovered from COVID before being vaccinated “produced the most robust serologic responses,” showing they enjoy a strong immune response.

The study has been peer-reviewed, according to Nature, although it published it before copy editing and proofing.

Tunisian naval forces recovered two bodies and picked up 178 migrants from the Mediterranean after the boats transporting them broke down on the perilous crossing from Libya to Europe, a Tunisian Defense Ministry spokesman said.

The spokesman said the migrants' boats had been at risk of sinking. An oil rig in the area sounded the alarm. The migrants hailed from Bangladesh, Eritrea, Egypt, Mali and Ivory Coast.

It was the second large-scale rescue in the area in 48 hours. The Tunisian navy picked up 267 migrants  who were also attempting the crossing from Libya, bound for Italy.

Adams' Apple...

The president of the New York City borough of Brooklyn and a former captain in the New York City Police Department repeatedly emphasized during the closing weeks of the mayoral primary campaign that curbing the increase in crime and gun violence in the city would be his top priority if elected. And Adams pledged in a recent radio interview "to zero in on gangs and guns."
He also pushed backed against calls to defund the police, as crime and public safety increasingly became a top issue in the primary battle.
"Look at me, and you’re seeing the future of the Democratic Party, If the Democratic Party fails to recognize what we did here in New York, then they’re going to have a problem in the midterm elections, and in the presidential elections," Adams said.
Adams emphasized that "America is saying we want to have justice and safety and end inequality. And we don’t want fancy candidates. We want candidates, their nails are not polished, they have callouses on their hands and they’re blue collar people."
Here is the next NYC, the Big Apple's Mayor...  Just a thought.

Swan...

"Black Swan" author Nassim Taleb said bitcoin is worth zero.
In a recent six-page draft paper titled "Bitcoin, Currencies, and Bubbles," Taleb laid out four key arguments against the cryptocurrency, which he promoted to his 743,000 Twitter followers.

First, the author said that in spite of the hype, bitcoin failed to satisfy the notion of "currency without government." In fact, he said, bitcoin proved to not even be a currency at all.

"The total failure of bitcoin in becoming a currency has been masked by the inflation of the currency value, generating (paper) profits for large enough a number of people to enter the discourse well ahead of its utility," he said.

Taleb's second criticism said bitcoin can neither be a short nor long-term store of value. He used the famous juxtaposition of gold versus bitcoin - which he said was poor comparison - to illustrate his point.

"Gold and other precious metals are largely maintenance-free, do not degrade over a historical horizon, and do not require maintenance to refresh their physical properties over time," he said. "Cryptocurrencies require a sustained amount of interest in them."

Bit-Scam...

Two brothers in South Africa have disappeared along with $3.6 billion worth of bitcoin that was housed on their cryptocurrency investment platform, according to a Cape Town law firm hired by investors to investigate the alleged heist.

The brothers, Ameer and Raees Cajee, set up their crypto investment service, Africrypt, in 2019.

But in April, as the price of bitcoin surged to an all-time high, Ameer, who serves as chief operating officer of Africrypt, sent an email to investors telling them that the company had been hacked.

Ameer asked clients not to report the incident to authorities or lawyers, saying that it would slow down their efforts to recover from the hacking.

But a group of skeptical investors contacted Hanekom Attorneys, “which focuses on all aspects of the cryptocurrency industry” and advises “large volume traders, exchanges and arbitrage companies.”

Good Luck to recoup the loss. Just a thought

Cases of heart inflammation in adolescents and young adults is likely linked to vaccination with the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 shots, a group of doctors advising the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a presentation released recently.

The CDC earlier this month said it was still evaluating the risk from the condition and did not confirm a causal relationship between the vaccines and the heart issue.

The agency, however, said a higher-than-expected number of young men have experienced heart inflammation after their second dose of the mRNA COVID-19 shots, with more than half the cases reported in people between the

ages of 12 and 24.

No body said how many were vaccinated. How many originally impacted by the Covid 19 Virus etc.  And a total number of those who are vaccinated and suffer from Myocarditis.   With that may be the politicians exit the push for vaccinating young people. Leave it to the Medical personal.  Just a thought.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that COVID-19 restrictions are lifted immediately as 70 percent of New Yorkers aged 18 or older have received the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccination series. The State's health guidance and New York Forward industry specific guidelines—including social gathering limits, capacity restrictions, social distancing, cleaning and disinfection, health screening, and contact information for tracing—are now optional for retail, food services, offices, gyms and fitness centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops and personal care services, among other commercial settings.

Unvaccinated individuals continue to be responsible for wearing masks, in accordance with federal CDC guidance.

Parties are taking place everywhere celebrating the New Freedom we enjoyed.

The low five, the high 10, the low 10, the forearm bash, the fist bump, the flying chest bump, the shug, the leaping shoulder carom, the ass slap, the pound, the man hug, the dap, the volleyballers' smack-'em high and smack-'em low, the gimme-skin slider, the helmet head butt, the soul shake, the body slam and the grip-and-rip, with no mask.

Cal/OSHA, which regulates workplace safety, passed new rules allowing vaccinated workers to stop wearing a mask at work, but unvaccinated workers will be required to wear them indoors.

Physical distancing will no longer be required, unless a workplace has a major outbreak of 20 cases or more.

The rules also require employers to verify the vaccination status of workers before allowing them to work mask-less, but employees will be allowed to simply “self-attest” that they are vaccinated.

So if you are 60 years or older, get vaccinated, and if you are 40 years or younger, enjoy being young. If you are between 40 and 60 years old, ask your doctor.

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday the NCAA can’t limit education-related benefits — like computers and paid internships — that colleges can offer their sports stars, a victory for athletes that could help open the door to further easing in the decades-old fight over paying student-athletes.

Schools recruiting top athletes could now offer tens of thousands of dollars in education-related benefits that also include study-abroad programs and graduate scholarships. However, the case doesn’t decide whether students can simply be paid salaries for the benefits their efforts bring — measured in tens of millions for many universities.

The high court agreed with a lower court’s determination that NCAA limits on the education-related benefits that colleges can offer athletes who play Division I basketball and football violate antitrust laws.

Phase...

With daily COVID cases falling New York State will begin shutting down the mass-vaccination centers that were a key part of its inoculation effort.

It will mark the first phase in the state's effort to wind down its large-scale vaccination sites and focus more on pop-up clinics across the state.

New York is currently running more than 20 vaccination sites across the state, of which at least a dozen have been large-scale facilities meant to administer hundreds or even thousands of shots a day.

But some of those sites have been seeing a very small number of people seeking shots in recent days and weeks as demand for a shot appears to dwindle.

So it started terribly for the elderly who couldn't get an appointment to get vaccinated and in a couple of months the State is shutting it all down.  Just a thought.

As progressives hammer Sen. Joe Manchin for opposing Democrats’ signature ethics and election reform bill, the West Virginian is busy working behind the scenes.

After writing an op-ed against the bill earlier this month, Manchin circulated a memo among his colleagues that outlines his preferred changes to a proposal his party has billed as essential to prepare for the 2022 midterms. Manchin also organized a Zoom meeting this week with civil rights groups and a handful of Republican senators to find areas of agreement.

The West Virginia senator organized his meeting after a similar conversation with leaders of national civil rights organizations one week earlier. With no change to the filibuster on the horizon, Manchin and the groups know that 10 Republican senators will be needed to support legislation that would achieve two major Democratic goals: reauthorizing key sections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and approving changes to American elections that lie at the heart of the party's massive but stalled elections bill.

In an interview, Manchin said he’d done the best he could to put together a proposal he could support.

Unexpectedly, one Senator controls the whole US Senate. Just a thought.

In late May and early June 2020, looters smashed storefronts in the Bronx and Manhattan boroughs of New York City.

Many were caught on tape, some with their faces visible. Others even posted their own videos of their actions those nights on social media. Hundreds were arrested.

Since then, the NYPD says the Bronx district attorney and the courts have dismissed most of those cases — 73 in all. Eighteen cases remain open and there have been 19 convictions for mostly lesser counts like trespassing counts which carry no jail time.

Llocal business leaders are upset as looters are not being held accountable for the destruction they caused. Until next time.

Many are asking is this the "Criminal Justice Reform." we are promised?

Borders...

Kamala Harris drawing the shortest straws in the White House?"

President Biden last week again gave the vice president a nearly impossible mission, asking her to lead the administration's battle against GOP-led voter suppression. "It's going to take a hell of a lot of work," Biden told Harris in an extreme understatement. Harris is off to an "unimpressive" start, said Noah Rothman at Commentary Magazine. Three months after Harris took on the border crisis, attempted border crossings are at a 21-year high.

With her aides reportedly "dismayed" she is now seen as the "border czar," Harris has reversed her opposition to border closures to stem the tide — but that quickly brought sharp criticism from progressives.

Harris is already unusually "unpopular" for a veep, said David Harsanyi at National Review. A recent YouGov poll showed her approval rating at 41 percent, and she's "25 points underwater among independents." A highly partisan senator from California before joining Biden's ticket, Harris has become a political liability for her boss: "Voter sentiment regarding Biden's handling of immigration dropped after he named Harris to head up the efforts.

Voting rights legislation is doomed in the 50-50 Senate unless Democrats eliminate the filibuster, which Sen. Joe Manchin refuses to do. Harris the first woman and first woman of color to be vice president already had been given the unenviable job of stemming migration at the southern border, among the most "intractable" and polarizing issues in politics.

Harris, who went to Central America to address "root causes" of migration, actually requested both assignments, said Cleve Wootson at The Washington Post. But if Biden's "heir apparent" flops, it "could stoke disappointment in the party and diminish her standing."  Just a thought.

Adams...

Polls suggest the left will lose out in the city arguably leading the socialist revival in the United States.

The forces driving a likely moderate outcome in the June 22 Democratic primary are varied; many are specific to New York and to this election. But the race also contains major warning signs for progressives across the country.

If the left loses out in the city arguably leading the socialist revival in the United States, it will be, at least in part, because of dramatic infighting fueled by rigid positions on sexual and social-justice politics, as well as the generalized failure to unify behind one candidate alluded to by Ocasio-Cortez.

poll released on Monday had Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and the former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang as the front-runners. Wiley had just 9 percent support, putting her in fifth place.

A fresher survey released Wednesday had Wiley in second, just in front of Yang and behind Adams. Both of those polls also showed the number of people supporting three different progressive candidates is the largest bloc in the city.

In a new study, the researchers tracked 23 late middle-aged adults with an average age of 65 and examined three specific biomarkers that are involved in learning and memory. Half were assigned to follow their typical physical activity patterns (which were less than the recommended 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week) while the other half were assigned "enhanced physical activity," or 3 sessions of weekly cardio that got progressively more challenging over the course of the study.

Both the gut microbiome and the three brain metabolites tracked showed beneficial changes in the enhanced exercise group.

Overall, the findings "support the beneficial effects of exercise training on brain function and brain health in asymptomatic individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease," Henriette van Praag, Ph.D., from Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine tells Florida Atlantic University's News Desk.

The best news of all: You need not run a marathon or bike a 100-mile century ride to score these brain benefits. Another recent study proves that walking 3 times per week can deliver a serious dose of dementia prevention. And if you're new to exercise on the whole, starting with just 10 minutes can truly make an impact in the fight to prevent or slow cognitive decline. So walking is a stellar place to start, and continue. Just a thought.

Consequences...

Vaccine advisers to the US Food and Drug Administration debated what kind of detailed information the agency would need to consider authorizing the use of coronavirus vaccines in children younger than 12.

Few advisers said it’s too soon to rush the use of vaccines in children because kids are at such low risk from the virus,

Dr. Cody Meissner, director of pediatric infectious diseases at Tufts University School of Medicine, said children are at low risk of severe disease from the virus and more study is needed about safety in younger age groups.

“Before we start vaccinating millions of adolescents and children, it’s important to find out what the consequences are,” Meissner said, noting a low Covid-19 hospitalization rate among children.

“As more people are immunized and become immune from infection, I think it’s likely that we are going to get this pandemic under pretty good control,” he said.

Biden stands to benefit from being in power during the nation's emergence from the pandemic. In the president's telling, the United States' surging vaccination rate, economic recovery and the hope slowly spreading across the nation belong to him and his party alone.

Recently, Biden took an early victory lap on reaching the vaccination milestone more than a month before he promised, saying the 100 millionth dose would be administered his 59th day in office.

Where is the credit for Big Pharma, the one who spend time, efforts, and money to present the life saving vaccines to the world?.

Some companies spent the money and weren't successful of getting the product out.

Bill Gates is the largest private farmland owner in the US - and according to a new report from NBC, potatoes that make McDonald's fries grow in his fields.

Citing data by The Land Report and its own research, NBC said that potatoes for McDonald's fries are grown in fields in Washington state that are so vast that you can see them from space.

Gates owns 269,000 acres of farmland across 18 states, according to updated numbers from NBC, making him America's biggest owner of private farmland.

Spokespeople for McDonald's and Gates did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

His land ownership has come under close scrutiny after he and his wife, Melinda French Gates, announced they were divorcing after 27 years of marriage. Gates is the fourth-richest person in the world, worth $144 billion, according to Bloomberg estimates

French Gates is expected to become one of the world's richest women after their divorce. TMZ was first to report that the couple would be splitting their property by a "separation contract" outside of court, as they do not have a prenuptial agreement in place.

Brain...

Working out regularly really does change the brain biology, and it is not just “go walk and you will just feel better.” Regular exercise, especially cardio, does change the brain.

Contrary to what some may think, the brain is a very plastic organ. Not only are new neuronal connections formed every day, but also new cells are generated in important areas of the brain. One key area is the hippocampus, which is involved in learning and memory and regulating negative emotions.

Molecule called brain-derived neurotrophic factor helps the brain produce neurons, or brain cells. A variety of aerobic and high-intensity interval training exercises significantly increase BDNF levels

Moderate exercise also seems to have anti-inflammatory effects, regulating the immune system and excessive inflammation. This is important, given the new insight neuroscience is gaining into the potential role of inflammation in anxiety and depression.

Finally, there is evidence for the positive effects of exercise on the neurotransmitters—brain chemicals that send signals between neurons—dopamine and endorphins. Both of these are involved in positive mood and motivation.

Moreover, it is Big Pharma who saved the Day or the year.

475...

There have been a higher-than-expected number of cases of heart inflammation in 16- to 24-year-olds after receiving their second dose of Pfizer's or Moderna's Covid-19 vaccines.

There have been 275 reported cases in that age group as of May 31, according to a CDC presentation that was prepared for a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel meeting. Scientists expected between 10 and 102 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis — where the heart muscle or the lining surrounding it are inflamed, according to the CDC.

Also, there have been a total of 475 reported cases of myocarditis or pericarditis in people age 30 and younger, according to the CDC.

Most patients who were hospitalized, or 81% of them, had full recovery from their symptoms, the agency said. As of May 31, 15 people remain hospitalized, with three in intensive care.

The majority of cases appear to occur in men and the median time to the onset of symptoms is two to three days, according to the CDC.

What is missing here is how many were vaccinated who are under the age of 30 years old?

Just a thought.
