Doctors in the U.S. have updated cholesterol level guidance to lower the threshold of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), often called “bad” cholesterol, that triggers that defines cardiovascular risk.

The revision pushes clinicians to act earlier and more precisely, reframing when prevention begins for millions of adults.

Across routine blood tests that track LDL levels, the change appears as newly lowered targets tied directly to a patient’s overall risk profile.

Food, movement, weight, tobacco, sleep, and blood pressure still anchor prevention because they change blood fats and artery inflammation.

The guideline kept exercise, healthy weight, no tobacco, and enough sleep central because medicines work best when those pressures ease.

Earlier prevention may be the most far-reaching part of the update. Adults without known lipid disorders should start periodic checks at 19, and children should be screened around ages nine to 11.
That earlier timing helps catch familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited condition that drives very high LDL from childhood and quietly speeds plaque growth for decades.

Prediction market volumes are booming in 2026, on pace to more than quadruple this year alone and reach an estimated $1 trillion in the next four years, according to Bernstein.

Volumes have already surged in the first few months of this year, the investment bank wrote in a report Tuesday, with Kalshi and Polymarket, the two largest platforms, seeing about $60 billion in market volume year-to-date — more than the $51 billion in total prediction market volume in all of 2025.

Growth rates for the platforms rival the artificial intelligence boom, according to Bank of America. Analyst Julie Hoover in a note last week called Kalshi one of the “fastest growing non-AI companies” in the U.S. 

Weekly trading volume on Kalshi — which controls more than 90% of the U.S. prediction market — has surged to more than $3 billion today from about $100 million a year ago, she wrote.

While prediction market volumes initially jumped in 2024 around the U.S. presidential election, they eventually surpassed those levels in 2025 as sports, cryptocurrency and macroeconomic contracts became popular.

Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani now estimates that total market volumes in 2026 will reach $240 billion, a 370% increase compared to last year. At a compound annual growth rate of roughly 80% between 2025 and 2030,

Federal immigration agents got a tip on the whereabouts of fugitive accused killer and drug trafficker Alejandro Perla Cruz, 37, of El Salvador on April 7 and set up a trap to nab him, officials said.
Cruz had been wanted for years, they said.

The agents finally were able to pull Cruz over near Newburgh under the ruse of a traffic stop at 6 a.m. April 13 and took him into custody, where he is now awaiting proceedings to send him back to face justice in El Salvador, authorities said.

ICE New York City will not allow violent criminals to evade justice within the United States, and we will never waver in our mission and mandate to remove them from our country,” said Kenneth Genalo, director of the ICE New York City Field Office, in a statement.

Dan Markel, 41, a Harvard law grad, was a prominent Florida State University professor who shared custody of his two toddlers with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson. 

Charlie Adelson was convicted for orchestrating the 2014 killing of his brother-in-law amid a contentious child custody battle.   

His mother called him in jail and revealed that she was about to flee the country.

Donna Adelson was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the 2014 murder-for-hire plot of her former son-in-law, Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. 

Following a high-profile trial, she was convicted on all counts and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal entitled “Why I’m Becoming a Republican,” Dershowitz announced that he would be joining the Republican Party in protest over the opposition to Israel among some members of the Democratic Party.

While Dershowitz defended President Donald Trump as a member of his legal team during his first impeachment in 2020, the lawyer endorsed former President Joe Biden in the 2020 election and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2008.
