Asylum Seeker

New Year’s Eve 2015–2016 Events (Cologne and Other Cities) On December 31, 2015, large crowds of men—primarily of North African, Middle Eastern, and Arab origin, including newly arrived asylum seekers and migrants—committed widespread robberies and sexual assaults against women near the central railway station in Cologne and other German cities.

Police registered over 500 criminal complaints in Cologne alone, roughly 40% of which involved sexual offenses.

Freiburg Case (2018): In Freiburg, Germany, ten men—mostly Syrian refugees alongside individuals from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Germany—were convicted for the gang rape of an 18-year-old woman outside a nightclub after her drink was spiked. The lead defendant received a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence, and seven others received sentences up to four years.

Legislative and Political Impact: The incidents triggered intense national debate regarding Germany's open-door refugee policy and led the German Parliament to pass stricter sexual assault legislation, which also tightened rules for the deportation of foreign nationals convicted of sex crimes.
