An influx of over 170,000 newly arrived migrants since 2022 significantly increased the number of people in New York City's homeless shelter system, even as overall metrics fluctuated with changing federal and local policies. 

 Large arrivals of asylum seekers pushed the total population residing in NYC shelters to historic highs, accounting for a substantial majority of the two-year increase in sheltered homelessness reported across major US cities. 

 Migrant arrivals drove a 147% increase in entries to family-with-children shelters and a 185% increase in adult-family shelters, alongside doubling the unsheltered homeless youth population in certain tracking periods. 

The city implemented strict 30-to-60-day stay limits for adult migrants in shelters, which critics note has led to periodic evictions and increases in unsheltered individuals sleeping on streets or subways.
