The superintendent of a major Iowa public school district was arrested by ICE officers on Friday, setting off a flurry of starkly partisan comments from state lawmakers. The Department of Homeland Security claimed he had attempted to flee the arresting agents, and had in his vehicle a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a hunting knife.

ICE said Roberts was in the country illegally and had no work authorization. Roberts, who is from Guyana in South America, was considered an ICE fugitive because he was subject to a final removal order issued in 2024, the agency said.

DHS claimed that Roberts also had "existing weapon possession charges" from Feb. 5, 2020, but it was not clear where those charges were allegedly filed, nor whether they had been resolved.

The U.S. Supreme Court again cleared the way on Friday for Donald Trump’s administration to revoke a temporary legal protection for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants in the United States, backing a key priority of the Republican president as he pursues a policy of mass deportations.

The justices granted the administration’s request to put on hold a judge’s ruling that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem lacked the authority to end the Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, granted to the migrants under Trump’s Democratic predecessor Joe Biden while litigation proceeds.

Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration -  a central plank of his second term as president, and has moved to strip certain migrants of temporary legal protections, expanding the pool of possible deportees.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) said Monday that New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani “should be in the Socialist Party, not in the Democratic Party.”

“Listen, I — I think he’s a very impressive candidate and — right? And I’m not taking that away from him, but — my problem is that he’s a socialist, and he should be in the Socialist Party, not in the Democratic Party,” the New Jersey Democrat told CNN’s Kate Bolduan on “CNN News Central.”

This time, the Democratic party may lose more votes than ever since Biden's administration.  Just a thought.
