The toll of the Iraqi invasion  of 2003 and the violent events that followed for decades is still being calculated, but it's clear it was high. 

The Costs of War Project at Brown University counts as many as 210,038 Iraqi civilians who've died in violence since 2003, along with tens of thousands of Iraqi combatants — security forces and insurgents. [Other may calculate 1 million dead human]

There were 4,599 U.S. troops killed along with thousands more contractors working for the U.S.

The lessons of the invasion with near-consensus is about poor U.S. planning, tragically wrong assumptions and misleading claims about alleged chemical weapons stockpiles.

Unlike some Iraqi exiles who promised U.S. officials a grateful public and smooth transition and had the ear of the U.S. leadership, Iraqis in Baghdad expected chaos and danger from any regime change.   Just a thought.

Deport

 

The Biden administration has quietly resumed deportations to Russia, an apparent reversal of the position adopted after Russia invaded Ukraine just over a year ago, when such removals were suspended, the Guardian has learned.

News of resumed deportations to Russia came just over a year after reports that the Biden administration had suspended deportation flights to Russia, Ukraine and seven other countries in Europe during Russia’s attack on Ukraine. It is unclear when deportations to Russia resumed. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Migrants from Russia came to the US thinking they could seek asylum and be protected from deportation, freeing their trouble and hiding for a long while.

Technically speaking, naked implies that a person is unprotected or vulnerable. It also describes something that is unadorned or without embellishment, as in the oft-mentioned naked truth. Nude, on the other hand, means one thing: unclothed.

Think of it this way: if you doff your duds to pose while descending a staircase for a tasteful painting done by a respected artist, then you're nude. If a bunch of paparazzi suddenly burst in through the studio door and take your picture without permission, you are suddenly naked. 

And as the late great humorist Lewis Grizzard once pointed out, "Naked is when you ain't got no clothes on. Nekkid is when you ain't got no clothes on and you're up to something.

Syrian President Bashar al Assad arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday for an official visit, accompanied by his wife Asma al Assad, at a time when more Arab states have signalled openness to easing the isolation of Damascus.                                                                                                                                      The visit was marked with more ceremony than his previous trip to the UAE last year, which had been his first to an Arab state since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, when Gulf states including the UAE backed rebels fighting to overthrow Assad.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          So, with US forces occupying large area in support of the Democratic Resistance.. One would wonder why, and how the Civil war started and the killing continue?  Just a thought.

It is well-established that atrocities, including acts of torture, were committed against Iraqi detainees by some members of the United States Armed Forces. 

On 30 November 2004, the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York and four Iraqi citizens, who were allegedly detained and severely mistreated by U.S. forces in Iraq, brought criminal charges in Germany against United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, his Deputy Secretary for Intelligence Stephen Cambone, the former CIA Director, George Tenet, the former Commander of the United States Forces in Iraq, Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, and six other high-ranking officers who have served or are serving in Iraq. [1] According to the complainants, Lieutenant General Sanchez and three other officers are currently stationed at U.S. bases in Germany.

 

The complainants seek to have the ten U.S. officials indicted for war crimes under the German Völkerstrafgesetzbuch [2] (Code of Crimes Against International Law) and for acts of torture under domestic criminal legislation committed against the four Iraqi citizens and other detainees in Abu Ghraib and elsewhere.

Bankruptcy..

 

SVB Financial Group (SIVB.O) said on Friday it filed for a court-supervised reorganization under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to seek buyers for its assets, days after its former unit Silicon Valley Bank was taken over by U.S. regulators. 

The move to commence bankruptcy proceedings comes as emergency measures to shore up confidence have so far failed to dispel worries about a financial contagion.

Financial stocks have lost over billions of dollars in value since the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank (SBNY.O) last week, while credit stress has worsened for Wall Street's biggest banks. 

"It is impossible to know if there are other shoes to drop, but I think a good majority of the negative news is out there," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth Management.
