In early February 2025, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer held a press conference in his Manhattan office where he used an avocado, a lime, and a bottle of Corona beer as props to warn that proposed tariffs by President Donald Trump on Mexico and Canada would increase consumer prices.
Schumer was addressing new tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which he labeled a "Trump Super Bowl tax," noting that these items are key staples for Super Bowl parties.
"It's going to affect your guac, because what is guacamole made of? Avocados," Schumer said. He added that the tariffs would impact "higher prices for New Yorkers, higher prices for Americans".
Schumer's visual demonstration was criticized by comedian Jon Stewart, who mocked the tactic on The Daily Show by questioning the effectiveness of having the Senate leader explain that guacamole is made of avocados.
