Alexander Soofer, the 42-year-old executive director of the South L.A. nonprofit Abundant Blessings, was arrested in late January 2026 for a massive fraud scheme involving taxpayer funds meant for the homeless.
- Charged with wire fraud for allegedly obtaining $23 million in public funds under false pretenses and pocketing at least $10 million.
- Charged by the L.A. District Attorney with .....
Between 2018 and 2025, Soofer’s charity contracted with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) to provide housing and meals to over 600 people. Prosecutors allege he:
- Used the logos and names of real companies to create fake vendor and rent receipts.
- Paid himself above-market rent for properties he already owned while claiming he was leasing them from third parties.
- While he claimed to provide three nutritious meals daily, investigators found sites only offered items like Ramen noodles and canned beans.
- He allegedly lied about having a board of directors; some "members" did not exist, and others had never heard of him.
Authorities allege Soofer used the stolen millions to fund an extravagant personal life. A $7 million mansion in Westwood and a vacation property in Greece.
