Long Island’s two House Dems defied their party’s leaders last week to back a GOP-led spending bill that pumps more cash into ICE — sparking outrage from the left demanding they be booted from office.

Reps. Laura Gillen and Tom Suozzi — two proudly self-described “moderate” Democrats representing large portions of Long Island — joined their Republican colleagues Thursday in passing a $64.4 billion funding package for the Department of Homeland Security that includes about $10 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The pair’s votes, which helped the bill pass the House 220-207, has sparked sharp pushback from many Democrats who are now publicly calling for the pair to be challenged in their primary races.

That adds up to almost 2000 pounds, the weight of a subcompact SUV.

 A different study conducted by Franklin and his team years ago found that a shoveler’s heart rate increases up to 97% of his max heart rate, more than when the same person does a treadmill test at maximum exertion.

Secondly, snowstorms happen when it’s, well, cold. When you huff and puff in that cold air, your blood vessels constrict, making it harder for blood to circulate around your body. This raises your blood pressure, making it even harder for your heart to get enough blood, he says.

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s son was among the rowdy anti-ICE protesters taken into custody after a raucous demonstration at a Manhattan Hilton hotel Tuesday, The Post has learned.

Dante de Blasio, 29, was cited for trespassing and disorderly conduct after police moved in on the mob, which mistakenly believed federal immigration agents were holed up at the Hilton Garden Inn in Tribeca, sources said.

In all, 66 protesters were taken into custody, with only two being issued desk appearance tickets while the rest received summonses, according to police.

Former CNN host Don Lemon has been arrested after he entered a Minnesota church and filmed anti-immigration enforcement protesters as they disrupted a service.

Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents on Thursday night while in Los Angeles covering the Grammy Awards, according to a statement from his lawyer Abbe Lowell.

In his own defence, Lemon said in a recent video: "Once the protest started in the church, we did an act of journalism, which was report on it."

President Donald Trump's administration initially sought to charge eight people involved in the Minnesota church protest, citing a law that protects people in places of worship.

New work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are set to go into effect on Feb. 1 and it could mean that millions of Americans lose their benefits.

Nearly 42 million Americans, including low-income families and vulnerable households, rely on the federal program to help pay for groceries or other household essentials.

According to August 2025 estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, about 1.1 million people will lose SNAP benefits between 2025 and 2034, including 800,000 able-bodied adults through age 64 who don't live with dependents and 300,000 parents or caregivers up to age 64 with children aged 14 and older.

Additionally, exemptions were changed for parents or other family members with responsibility for a dependent under 18 years old, lowering the age of exemptions to those caring for children under 14 years old.

New projections of the 2030 U.S. Census indicating a major shift of electoral votes from traditionally blue states to red states could be a "game changer" in the quadrennial battle between Democrats and Republicans for the presidency.

Left-leaning California, New York, and Illinois could lose a total of eight congressional seats due to sweeping population shifts this decade, with right-tilting Texas and Florida gaining eight seats, according to an analysis by the non-partisan Redistrict Network

The findings, which are based on 2025 Census Bureau population estimates and data from previous years, were compiled by Carnegie Mellon University redistricting expert Dr. Jonathan Cervas and released on Tuesday.

Another projection, from the Republican-aligned American Redistricting Project, indicates Texas gaining four seats and Florida gaining two.

The projections spell trouble for Democrats when it comes to the battle for the House majority next decade, after reapportionment based on the 2030 Census. But it would also be a major setback for them starting in the 2032 presidential election, because states' electoral votes are based in part on the number of their congressional seats.    Just a thought.

Legendary Democratic strategist David Axelrod warned Democrats against pushing for ICE to be abolished in their campaigns on Thursday.

Axelrod joined CNN’s Boris Sanchez and Brianna Keilar on air amid calls from some Democrats to abolish ICE following the deaths of 37-year-old protesters Renee Good and Alex Pretti during altercations with federal agents in Minneapolis this month.

Axelrod warned that campaigning to abolish ICE will not be a winning campaign message for Democrats, arguing most Americans believe in some sort of “immigration enforcement in the country.” 

He argued a movement to abolish ICE could end up like defund the police calls in 2020, with the public not supporting the “implication” of such an extreme move.

I think that people believe you should come to the country legally, and if you don’t, you know, there should some penalty for that. They do believe that. But I don’t think they want to abolish ICE. Well, you know the problem that we’ve seen before when people said abolish the police.

As detailed by The Hill, the comments come as the Trump administration continues to escalate immigration enforcement nationwide.

The announcement arrives amid a broader federal push under President Donald Trump to expand ICE operations in large metropolitan areas.

Mamdani outlined his stance, arguing that the agency has fundamentally abandoned its mission. 

He said he now views ICE as “an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist,” framing the issue as a systemic failure rather than a policy disagreement.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul are aligned on policies like expanding free child care, but have so far proven to be miles apart on addressing homelessness in the city’s subways.

During her “State of the State” speech Tuesday, Hochul announced plans to expand a state-run program called SCOUT, which deploys teams of behavioral nurses and police officers into subway stations, where they force homeless people into hospital care after a nurse determines they’re either at risk of harming themselves or others.

 The program currently has 10 teams, which Hochul wants to grow to 15
During his campaign, Mamdani proposed removing police officers from homeless outreach in the subways and replacing them with “transit ambassadors” who offer “assistance with emergencies, directions, accessibility, and other transit information to riders on the platform."

Mamdani has also said he would not conduct sweeps of homeless encampments in the city.

The House Oversight Committee is probing “Squad” Rep. Ilhan Omar’s skyrocketing family wealth after a $9 billion Somali social services fraud scandal exploded in her district,The Post has learned.

Republicans want to know how Somali-born Omar (D-Minn.) and her politically-connected husband Tim Mynett went from nearly broke to being worth up to $30 million in just a year, according to her 2024 disclosure forms.

“There are a lot of questions as to how her husband accumulated so much wealth over the past two years,” Comer said. “It’s not possible. It’s not. I’m a money guy. It’s not possible.”

Fetterman stressed his commitment to honesty and representing all of Pennsylvania, a politically diverse state. “I would rather be very honest and play it straight. 

I would rather be a great senator than one who just plays to one side. I represent Pennsylvania, the most purple state in the country. 

I don’t just represent Democrats; I represent 13 million Pennsylvanians. I try to play it straight because that is my responsibility.”

The Major Case Squad reports the arrest of a College Point man on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 for multiple Grand Larcenies that occurred in Nassau County.

According to detectives, a thorough investigation led to the arrest of Defendant Fabio Diaz Sierra, 46, of 12011 12th Avenue for his involvement in the following incidents.

 

On October 14, 2025 a victim withdrew money from Chase Bank located at 2360 Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park and proceeded to Atlantic Avenue where he parked his vehicle. When the victim returned to his vehicle, the money was removed from the center console.

 

On November 13, 2025 a victim withdrew money from TD Bank located at 540 Jericho Turnpike in Mineola and proceeded to a parking lot on Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park where he parked his vehicle. When the victim returned to his vehicle the front passenger window was broken and the money was removed.

 

The defendant is charged with three (3) counts of Grand Larceny 4th Degree and two (2) counts of Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree. 

The defendant was released into the custody of US Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Christopher Southerland 43, of Glen Burnie, worked as a system administrator for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure from April 2020 through July 2023—an IT role that included the ability to request mobile phones for staff.

Prosecutors say he exploited that access by ordering roughly 240 new government phones and having them shipped to his home in Maryland. At the time, the committee had only about 80 staff members, investigators noted.

 Southerland, allegedly, sold more than 200 of the phones to a nearby pawn shop, a volume investigators say was far beyond any normal device replacement cycle. 

Prosecutors claim he also told a pawn shop employee to break the phones down and sell them “in parts,” allegedly to avoid detection through the House’s mobile device management software.
