In a week full of big economic-news releases, before the U.S.  learned we’ve experienced two consecutive quarters of the GDP shrinking, the traditional definition of a recession.

Treasury secretary Janet Yellin and other Biden officials are already arguing that we’re not in a recession which seems like a clear hint that they expect Thursday’s numbers to be ugly. But to the average American, “recession” is a synonym for “economic hard times” and with inflation at 9.1 percent, lots of Americans feel squeezed.

Yellin said most Americans define recessions as similar to those that have occurred in the past: "Substantial job losses and mass layoffs, businesses shutting down, private sector activities slowing considerably, family budgets under immense strain ... a broad-based weakening of our economy."  "That is not what we're seeing right now."

Her remarks extended the Biden administration's concerted pushback against recession talk after the Commerce Department reported earlier on Thursday that U.S. GDP shrank 0.9% in the second quarter, on top of a 1.6% contraction in the first quarter.

Former Obama White House education advisor Seth Andrew was sentenced Thursday to a year-and-one-day in federal prison for a scheme to steal $218,000 from a New York charter school network he founded.

He was arrested in April 2021 on charges of wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements to a financial institution. He pleaded guilty in January to wire fraud.

Andrew, who is the husband of CBS News anchor Lana Zak, founded Democracy Prep Public Schools in 2005.

Prosecutors said that in 2019 — more than two years after severing ties with Democracy Prep — he looted money from escrow accounts belonging to individual schools in the charter school network.

China fired multiple missiles toward waters near northeastern and southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, the island's Defense Ministry said, as Beijing makes good on its promise that Taipei will pay a price for hosting US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command said in a statement that multiple missiles had been fired into the sea off the eastern part of Taiwan. It said all the missiles hit their target accurately.

"The entire live-fire training mission has been successfully completed and the relevant air and sea area control is now lifted," China's statement said. Earlier, the Eastern Theater Command said it had conducted long-range, live-fire training in the Taiwan Strait, state broadcaster CCTV reported, as part of planned military exercises around the island.

President Biden’s trip to Saudi Arabia was deemed a failure by analysts after oil-producing states announced Wednesday that they would boost output by just 100,000 barrels a day starting next month — a drop in the bucket compared to America’s vast energy needs.

Despite the diplomacy, the cartel opted to keep supplies tight while prices remain high. The 100,000 barrels a day boost is a far cry from the 648,000-barrels-a-day increase that was announced in June.

China said Friday it would halt cooperation with the United States on areas including military relations and climate change while imposing sanctions against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as Beijing stepped up its retaliation to her Taiwan visit.

The new measures were announced as military drills Beijing launched furiously in the wake of her trip earlier this week sent warplanes, naval ships and missiles menacingly close to this small island democracy despite growing criticism.

Beijing said Friday it will cancel phone calls between regional military commanders, defense meetings, talks on maritime safety and on climate change. It also said it would end cooperation with the U.S. on anti-drug efforts, returning illegal immigrants and transnational crime. Earlier, China took personal action against Pelosi, announcing sanctions on the speaker and her immediate family in response to what the Chinese Foreign Ministry called her “egregious provocations.”

These folks can't stay in power- in the White House, without starting war somewhere, and say we are saving Democracy.  Just a thought.

Roughly 50 migrants arrived at a Port Authority in New York City on Friday. They were greeted and brought into the custody of non-governmental charity workers and volunteers.

"In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city. I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief."

The shoe is in the other foot and the Sanctuary City Democrats don't like it. Just a thought.
