A police officer used a metal detector to find a woman’s $20,000 engagement ring after she lost it on Fire Island, officials said.  The woman called the police after she realized she’d lost the pricey ring.
When the search of the home turned up short, another officer brought his personal metal detector to Atlantique Beach, where the woman had been sitting.  After 10 minutes, the metal detector went off, and Officer McDowell managed to locate the ring in the sand. It was the second missing ring the officer has used his metal detector to find, the department said.

Don't lose it again, insurance may not pay easily.

A bystander in Washington fatally shot a carjacking suspect after the carjacker allegedly shot a man who refused to give up control of his vehicle.
Police said the suspect shot a display case inside the Walmart before exiting and attempting the carjacking.  He was attempting to carjack a second vehicle in the parking lot when the armed bystander intervened.
Witnesses told KOMO that a total of three bystanders pulled guns on the suspect and at least one of them fired.
Police say the suspect may have been connected to an earlier attempted carjacking in Tumwater.

Federal prosecutors indicted Elizabeth Holmes on criminal fraud charges for allegedly defrauding investors, doctors and the public as the head of the once-heralded blood-testing startup Theranos. Federal prosecutors also brought charges against the company's former second-in-command.

Holmes, and her former Chief Operating Officer Ramesh Balwani, are charged with two counts conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud each,
Prosecutors allege that Holmes and Balwani deliberately misled investors, policymakers and the public about the accuracy of Theranos' blood-testing technologies going back to at least 2013. Holmes, 34, founded Theranos in Palo Alto, California, in 2003.
Holmes said Theranos had discovered a new way of doing blood testing, dozens of tests with just a prick of a finger and few droplets of blood. A notoriously secretive company, Theranos shared very little about its blood-testing machine, nicknamed Edison, with the public or medical community. Holmes said she was inspired to start the company in response to her fear of needles.      Now we find out.

Russia comprehensively thrashed Saudi Arabia, 5-0, in the opening game of its home World Cup. Gazinsky scored on a header 12 minutes in, and afterward Saudi Arabia could offer little resistance.
Russia’s second, third and fourth goals were all by substitutes. With time running out, Aleksandr Golovin got a fifth goal on a free kick, past a badly tired Saudi defense.
It became clear very quickly that they were no match for a Russian team that itself has not been a worldbeater in recent years.
The Russian team has few players who can score goals from anywhere. That will give the Russian a boost against the next game with Egypt. Since Egypt coach's plan may be defensive, the Russian most likely will repeat their victory.

Kathryn Novak sued her ex-boyfriend Brandon Simpson and five other members of the fraternity’s UCF chapter, for sharing an explicit video he’d recorded with Novak on the Facebook page, allowing it to eventually reach over 200 fraternity brothers without her consent.

Novak and Simpson were in a long-distance relationship from October 2017 to February 2018. While Novak was living in Arizona, they saw each other a few times a month—sexting and recording “at least” one of their sex acts when she visited Simpson at UCF in Orlando, the papers state.

Iceland qualified for its first-ever FIFA World Cup this year, becoming the smallest nation by population to ever clinch a World Cup berth. They didn't have to wait very long for their first goal in the tournament.

Its first game of the group stage came against Lionel Messi and Argentina one of the tournament favorites. But after Sergio Aguero scored in the 19th minute to give the Argentinians an early lead, Iceland responded quickly.
Alfred Finnbogason -- a striker for the German club FC Augsburg -- scored the historic first goal for Iceland just four minutes after.
This team is highly qualified.
