The incident involved theft of more than 100 million customer records, stolen by a single, experienced engineer, according to court filings in Seattle.

The details set it apart from breaches of companies which were attacked from the outside by criminals and different from the spate of ransomware attacks by groups of individuals outside the U.S.

Paige Thompson was able to exploit a flaw in an application firewall stored on an Amazon Web Services cloud server to gain access to the information.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed Thompson had worked for Amazon but she left in 2016. The breach took place between March and July this year.

The incident is still unraveling and will bring up major issues facing the biggest tech companies, cloud firms and banks, namely how to control who has access to sensitive consumer data and detect insiders who may go rogue.

The New York City Board of Elections declared Monday that Queens Borough President Melinda Katz narrowly topped her challenger, Tiffany Cabán, in the Democratic primary to become the county’s next district attorney by a margin of just 60 votes.
But the fight for the party’s nomination will continue in Queens Supreme Court, where public defender Cabán plans to argue the BOE improperly excluded hundreds of ballots that could once again tip the scales in her favor.

Gun Laws...

Image result for 1 killed and 11 injured in nyc images

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, joined by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, fulfilled his promise to sign the Red Flag Bill, a key component of his 2019 Justice Agenda. The Red Flag Bill prevents individuals who show signs of being a threat to themselves or others from purchasing or possessing any kind of firearm.

This legislation builds on New York's strongest in the nation gun laws and makes New York the first in the United States to empower its teachers and school administrators to prevent school shootings by pursuing court intervention.

 (Three months later)

A community festival was coming to a close when gunfire erupted in a Brooklyn neighborhood, leaving one man dead, another person in critical condition and 10 others wounded, authorities said as they searched for two shooters they believe were involved.
NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said the shooting late Saturday in the borough's Brownsville section "was a tragic end to a wonderful weekend" where thousands of people had come to take part in the annual Old Timers Event, which he said had been held since 1963.
So it is not as simple as the governor say.  Just a thought.

Marcus Hutchins, the malware researcher who became known as an “accidental hero” for stopping the WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017, has been sentenced to supervised release for one year on charges of making and selling the Kronos banking malware.

Presiding Judge J. P. Stadtmueller described Hutchins, 25, as a “talented” but “youthful offender” in remarks in federal court in Milwaukee.

Hutchins, a British citizen who goes by the online handle @MalwareTech, was arrested in Las Vegas by federal marshals in August 2017 while boarding a flight back to the U.K. following the Def Con security conference.

The government alleged in an indictment that he developed Kronos, a malware that steals banking credentials from the browsers of infected computers. The indictment also accused him of developing another malware known as the UPAS Kit.

Todd...

A Columbia Journalism Review writer blasted NBC News’ Chuck Todd for “basic misunderstanding of the requirements of his job” this week after the me-first host emphasized the entertainment aspect of Peacock Network political coverage.
Popula founder Maria Bustillos penned the scathing takedown for the prestigious CJR, which examined Todd’s recent performances during the Robert Mueller hearings and NBC’s Democratic primary debate.

Todd’s performance was mocked by people on both sides of the aisle, with the “Meet the Press” host being widely condemned for expecting short answers to long questions.

Bustillos – who has written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper’s, and The Guardian -- noted that “Todd’s focus on the ‘entertainment’ aspect of politics coverage is often in evidence.”

Mystries...

PHOTO: A composite sketch of a man seen talking to Lucas Robertson Fowler on British Columbia Highway 97 on July 14. The following day, Fowler and his girlfriend, Chynna Noelle.

Canadian police investigating the mysterious death of a young couple and the disappearance of two teenagers.

Chynna Noelle Deese, 24, of the United States, and her boyfriend, Lucas Robertson Fowler, 23, of Australia, were found dead on July 15 along Highway 97, British Columbia. Fowler's blue 1986 Chevrolet van was located at the scene, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Four days later, police discovered a red and grey Dodge pickup truck with a sleeping camper on fire south of Stikine River Bridge on Highway 37, some 30 miles from Dease Lake. The two young men who were driving that vehicle, both Canadian -- were nowhere to be found and have not been in contact with their families in days.
While investigating the burning truck, authorities came across the body of a man at a nearby highway pullout, less than two miles south of the scene.

The dead man is believed to be someone investigators "are working to identify."  The cause of death was unknown and it's unclear how he is connected with the vehicle fire or the two missing men.

Police released two separate composite sketches of individuals and asked for the public's assistance in helping to identify them.

Allergan has announced a global recall of textured breast implants that are linked to a rare
type of cancer, at the request of the Food and Drug Administration.

"Biocell saline-filled and silicone-filled textured breast implants and tissue expanders will
 no longer be sold.

The FDA said in a statement that while the overall incidence of the cancer appears to
be low, it asked Allergan to initiate the Biocell implant recall "once the evidence indicated
that a specific manufacturer's product appeared to be directly linked to significant patient
harm, including death."

The agency does not recommend that people who already have the textured implants get
them removed unless there are symptoms or problems, but it is providing information for patients and providers to consider.

The FDA said it requested the recall after a "significant increase" in cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Since its previous report in February, there have been 116 new cases and 24 deaths.

In a milestone for forensic criminal investigators, a convicted killer received two life sentences for a 1987 double slaying after becoming the first person arrested through genetic genealogy to be found guilty at trial.

“The conviction and sentencing of William Earl Talbott II marks a new era for the use genetic genealogy for identifying violent criminals since it has now been tested and tried in a court of law,” geneology expert CeCe Moore told ABC News.

William Earl Talbott II was arrested in May 2018 and charged with aggravated murder for the Washington state cold case killings of 20-year-old Jay Cook and 18-year-old Tanya Van Cuylenborg, authorities said. A jury found Talbott guilty last month.

Boris Johnson will become Britain’s next prime minister after being elected leader of the Conservative party, defeating Jeremy Hunt in the party’s leadership contest.
The former mayor of London, who has long cherished an ambition to lead his country, won the contest by a convincing margin of 92,153 votes to 46,656, with 66% of the vote. Turnout was 87.4% among 159,320 party members.
In a characteristically flippant acceptance speech, Johnson conceded that even some of his own supporters may “wonder quite what they have done”.
He said that at a pivotal moment in history, his party must show its “historic ability to balance competing instincts – marrying the desire to maintain a close relationship with the EU, with the desire for democratic self-government in this country”.
He reminded his audience of ministers and party staff of his campaign mantra: “Deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.”

New York-born Johnson, 55, is the front runner to become Britain's next prime minister.  He is a direct descendant of King George II.

He passed through many of the hallowed corridors of the British establishment, including Eton College and Oxford University.
Johnson gave up his U.S. citizenship in 2016 amid a tax probe.
Prior to getting into politics, Johnson was a journalist. He started as a reporter for the Times (of London) but was fired for fabricating a quote. He later edited The Spectator, a longstanding political magazine. His speeches are often laced with allusions to classical civilizations, ribald innuendo and are never far from controversy.
"She's got dyed blonde hair and pouty lips, and a steely blue stare, like a sadistic nurse in a mental hospital," he said of Hilary Clinton in 2007.

A Liberian soccer player’s attempt to trick U.S. immigration authorities into giving him a green card backfired after an agent in Rhode Island viewing the phone of the woman claiming to be his wife saw an incoming message from another person thanking her for the “best sex ever,” prosecutors say.
Boley was seeking a green card and the woman he claimed to be his wife allowed an immigration officer to review her phone in hopes to make clear that the two truly were in love.

While the officer was going through messages on her device, a new one popped up – from “Chriss”, complimenting her for the “best sex ever”, the Providence Journalreported.
“At trial, the woman testified that her marriage to Boley was a sham, and that she married Boley solely for the purpose of him obtaining a green card,”  mail sent to her address where he did not live.”

Pigmentosa...

Image result for keto diet cartoon

One of the most popular diet trends of this decade, the idea behind the keto diet is that restricting carb intake to an extremely low number while eating large amounts of fats will trick the body into entering ketosis, a state in which the body burns fats for fuel. Ketosis is difficult to maintain, but once it is achieved, the body can react in strange ways.
If you search “keto rash” on Reddit, you’ll find dozens of dieters begging for help with the condition, sharing anecdotes of excruciating itching and discomfort. The rash tends to start near the chest and spread, reaching every part of the body, including the scalp.
The condition is called prurigo pigmentosa. Existing scientific literature shows a link between ketosis and the rash, though studies show other intervening factors (such as sunlight, extreme heat, allergens and sweating) may worsen the condition.

Keto flu, keto breath, keto crotch…Unfortunately, new side effects of the keto diet continue to emerge. People are now breaking out in full-body, painful rashes after going on the extremely low-carb diet. And perhaps the worst part is that this “keto rash” can leave brown marks on the surface of the skin that stick around for life.

An emu-at-large is becoming a local celebrity in North Carolina after eluding would-be
captors for at least three weeks.

The large flightless bird, a species native to Australia, has been spotted periodically around the state’s Chatham and Orange counties since June 26, according to The News & Observer. It’s unclear exactly where the emu came from, though officials suspect the bird escaped from a farm.

The most recent reported sighting was Thursday, when the bird was seen “running through someone’s yard” near the line between the two counties, Fox said. Before that, the big bird’s location had been pinpointed in Chatham County last week, but “he/she fled as soon as officers arrived on the scene.”

Facebook is going into the banking business.
The social networking company  said it plans to help launch a digital currency in 2020, marking one of the company’s most aggressive moves yet to push beyond digital advertising.

A nonprofit group based in Geneva, the Libra Association, will oversee the currency, called Libra.
Facebook said that it wants the currency to be available starting the first half of next year and that it believes many of the 2 billion people who are already on the company’s services will one day regularly use the new currency to buy things or send money internationally.
The project would bring a consumer-friendly version of digital currencies to smartphones around the world, potentially creating a way for people to easily transfer money, build credit and pay bills while avoiding costly fees. Libra is open source, meaning any company or person can build a business within its framework.

Image result for De blasio's cartoon

Mayor de Blasio’s presidential campaign is powered by donations rife with possible conflicts.
At least $370,000 in contributions to de Blasio 2020 are tied to people and entities with business or interests before the city, an analysis by the Daily News found.
The donations represent 34% of nearly $1.1 million that de Blasio’s campaign collected between May 16 and the end of June, according to filings with Federal Election Commission.
They came from individuals, corporations, limited liability companies and firms with vested interests in municipal operations and regulations, as well as donors who work for entities lobbying the de Blasio administration and relatives of those with business before the city.
The fact that Mayor de Blasio’s long shot presidential campaign is so heavily funded by individuals who have interests before the city is troubling, particularly because the mayor has a track record of favoring campaign donors.
