The strategy of sitting back and waiting for Russia’s war machine to grind to a halt because of sanctions could go “terribly wrong,” according to Niall Ferguson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. 

The Ukrainian resistance cannot hold the fort for much longer, and sanctions by the West won’t be able to stop Russia in time, he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Friday.  

He said the U.S. is relying heavily on sanctions and “very belated arms deliveries” to Ukraine, but he’s concerned that those fighting for Ukraine won’t be able to defend the country for long.  

Though the Russians have sustained more casualties than expected, they are still “advancing steadily,” he said.  

“The assumption that this is going to drag out, that the United States can sit back and watch the economic sanctions do their work may be gravely mistaken,” Ferguson said.

Best to help reach a peaceful agreement rather expand the war. Just a thought.

The USA and the Biden Administration have done enough damage in pouring gasoline on the fire that is going in Ukraine. Supplying the Ukraine with weapon will prolong the suffering and the outcome is the same.

We promised the Ukrainians too much and now we are facing a World War 3 that we don't want, and the world don't want it.

The war in Ukraine have caused the USA and the Europeans major problems as it is while Poland is pouring the American to the Midst of it.

Enough with wars, enough with supporting people who are novel in the misery to come as a result of war.

Republican leaders in the state House and Senate in Michigan vow to temporarily nix the state's 27 cent gas tax, promising to send the proposal to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer some time next week. 

The House approved the rapidly conceived bill by a 63-39 margin Wednesday afternoon, chiefly with GOP support but also with the backing of a handful of Democrats. The Senate plans to vote on the bill sometime next week. In theory, that puts the measure on Whitmer's desk by March 18.

The GOP plan would end the state tax on April 1 through the end of September, the end of the fiscal year. Lawmakers estimated Michigan drivers would save $750 million over that time, which translates to a similar amount of tax revenue not coming into state coffers.

United States on Wednesday denied renewed Russian accusations that Washington was operating biowarfare labs in Ukraine, calling the claims "laughable." 
Late on Tuesday, Russia repeated its accusation of several years that the United States is working with Ukrainian laboratories to develop biological weapons. Such assertions in Russian media increased in the run-up to Moscow's military move into Ukraine and were made as recently as Wednesday by foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

The White House had initially shrugged off calls to ban Russian oil, arguing that the impact on global markets would be destabilizing to the West. 

But Biden clearly warmed to the idea, even as some Democrats worried that they would pay a political price in November’s midterm elections for public frustrations about high gas prices. 

It is the first time the U.S. has gotten ahead of its European allies in sanctioning Russia. 

Europe relies far more heavily on Russian energy imports and has been more reluctant to join in a ban. The U.S. imports accounting for less than 3% of the nation’s energy supply. Europe imports more than 4 million barrels a day of Russian fuel.

Vice President Kamala Harris is jetting to Europe for a trip that became more complicated after one of her hosts -- Poland -- caught the United States by surprise with a proposal to provide its Soviet-era fighter jets to Ukraine.

What seemed like a straightforward mission turned more fraught when the Polish foreign ministry announced it was prepared to deploy the jets to the US Air Force's Ramstein Air Base in Germany, which in theory could then be provided to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pleaded for more aircraft amid the Russian invasion. But that offer had not been discussed with the US before Poland announced it publicly, and Polish officials did not bring it up with Secretary of State Antony Blinken when he was recently in Poland, either.

It appeared designed to avoid the appearance of Poland directly arming Ukraine in its battle against Russia, but created a conundrum for the United States, which is also intent on avoiding direct conflict with Moscow.
