Dallas County, Texas, has reached herd immunity with 80 percent of its population either being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or having natural immunity as a result of past infections, a nonprofit announced Wednesday.

Herd immunity was reached on July 4 with 46.6 percent of the population receiving two shots of the vaccine and 48.7 percent having natural immunity from a previous COVID-19 infection, Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation (PCCI) said in a statement.

"While this represents good progress. The nonprofit warned, however, that the target for herd immunity could jump to 88 percent due to the more contagious delta variant hitting the area.

The Food and Drug Administration announced a new warning for the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine on Monday, saying the shot has been linked to a serious but rare side effect called Guillain-Barré syndrome, in which the immune system attacks the nerves.

About 100 preliminary reports of Guillain-Barré have been detected in vaccine recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the United States, according to a companion statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which monitors vaccine safety systems with the FDA. Of these reports, 95 were serious and required hospitalization, the FDA statement said. There was one death.

The cases have largely been reported about two weeks after vaccination and mostly in men, many aged 50 and older, according to the CDC.  

Earlier, a pause  was recommended after reports of cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals following administration of  COVID-19 Vaccine. During the pause, medical and scientific teams examined available data to assess the risk of thrombosis involving the cerebral venous sinuses, or CVST (large blood vessels in the brain), and other sites in the body (including but not limited to the large blood vessels of the abdomen and the veins of the legs) along with thrombocytopenia, or low blood platelet counts.

Mayor de Blasio, who’s serving his last few months in City Hall, said he didn’t feel slighted in the least Monday over not receiving an invitation to the White House to discuss policing  hours before his presumptive successor, Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Eric Adams, was set to appear alongside President Biden to opine on the topic.

Ahead of the meeting, Biden had an alternative take on the sensitive question of whether to expand police departments at a time when gun violence is on the rise in several U.S. cities.

Biden suggested cities seeing shooting spikes should use leftover federal coronavirus relief funds to hire more officers and train them in “community policing.”

Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Eric Adams wants to decrease gun violence, but he believes Democrats are going about it the wrong way on a national level.

While much of the talk about guns in Washington, D.C., has revolved around assault rifles, Adams on the "State of the Union"  that lawmakers must also address the problem of illegal handguns.

I believe those priorities were misplaced and it's almost insulting what we have witnessed over the last few years. Many ......... saw these numbers, they knew that the inner cities in particular, where Black, Brown, and poor people live, they knew they were dealing with this real crisis," Adams said, citing Atlanta, the South Side of Chicago and the Brownsville neighborhood in Brooklyn as examples.

. "The numbers of those who are killed with handguns are astronomical.

Heavy thunderstorms caused a deluge of rain, flooding subway stations and roadways in New York City hours before Tropical Storm Elsa arrived.   

The thunderstorms Thursday evening caused flash flooding in Manhattan and the Bronx that submerged at least one subway stop with waist-high water and soaked several others as traffic on busy roadways came to halt.    

The rains prompted flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service. Some pockets of the city saw nearly 3 to 3.5 inches of rain Thursday, according to weather service data. 

Elsa had not yet reached New York when the flooding started but the tropical storm is expected to bring even more rainfall to the city, which had seen another severe thunderstorm Wednesday evening. 

Some think we learned from Sandy Storm!!!!

Convicted lawyer Michael Avenatti’s request for a new trial was denied as a judge ruled prosecutors’ allegedly improper conduct didn’t impact a jury that found he tried to extort $25 million from Nike Inc.

The ruling ensures that Avenatti, who was found guilty in February 2020 after a three-week trial in Manhattan, will be sentenced after a long delay caused by the pandemic.

 A New York judge sentenced the combative California lawyer Michael Avenatti to 2 1/2 years in prison for trying to extort up to $25 million from Nike by threatening to use his popularity to damage the company’s reputation.

Michael Avenatti was on every TV channel that was against President Trump at the time. Many in the democratic party/ the Media wanted him to run for the president of the United States of America. What a choice.
