Saudi Arabia on Friday published new laws that loosen restrictions on women by allowing all citizens women and men alike to apply for a passport and travel freely, ending a long-standing guardianship policy that had controlled women's freedom of movement.

The development is a potential game-changer for Saudi women's rights.

The kingdom's legal system has long been criticized because it treated adult women as minors, requiring they have a man's consent to obtain a passport or travel abroad. Often a woman's male guardian is her father or husband, and in some cases a woman's son.

The changes were widely celebrated by Saudis on Twitter, with many posting memes showing people dashing to the airport with luggage and others hailing the 33-year-old crown prince believed to be the force behind these moves.  

Other changes issued in the decrees allow women to register a marriage, divorce or a child's birth, and obtain official family documents, which could ease hurdles women faced in obtaining a national identity card and enrolling their children in school.

The officer, Keith Buchanan, who graduated from the police academy in 2012, was relieved of all duties and is likely to face charges of criminal mischief, false reporting and discharging a firearm within the city limits, Chief Patrick Smith said at a news conference.  

Citing other officers for their legitimate heroism, Smith said Buchanan's alleged action "is a slap in the face to them and the efforts that they have put out."  

Buchanan was patrolling near railroad tracks along the Birmingham-Tarrant border early on July 21 when he radioed a call for help, with gunshots audible in the background.

Fellow officers searched for Buchanan for more than half an hour before Tarrant officers found him on the ground beside the tracks, "appearing to be unconscious and holding his gun," Smith said. Buchanan's police car was found nearby with a bullet hole through the front window, he said.

"I'm here to talk about stolen valor, stolen honor and an attempt to stage a shooting that has left this department polarized and hanging its head low in disbelief," Smith.

The Kennedy family is once again grappling with unimaginable loss. Saoirse Kennedy Hill, 22 yo. a granddaughter of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, died Thursday at the family compound on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. 

The 22-year-old Boston College student was set to graduate next year. Her grandmother Ethel Kennedy said in a statement, "the world is a little less beautiful today."

In an op-ed for her high school publication nearly a decade later, Saoirse described a struggle with mental illness. "My depression took root in the beginning of my middle school years and will be with me for the rest of my life," she wrote. She said she took a leave of absence from school to get treatment, and encouraged others to be open about their struggles.

Capital One is dealing with one of the most important data breaches of the year.

The incident involved theft of more than 100 million customer records, stolen by a single, experienced engineer, according to court filings in Seattle.

The details set it apart from breaches of companies which were attacked from the outside by criminals and different from the spate of ransomware attacks by groups of individuals outside the U.S.

Paige Thompson was able to exploit a flaw in an application firewall stored on an Amazon Web Services cloud server to gain access to the information.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed Thompson had worked for Amazon but she left in 2016. The breach took place between March and July this year.

The incident is still unraveling and will bring up major issues facing the biggest tech companies, cloud firms and banks, namely how to control who has access to sensitive consumer data and detect insiders who may go rogue.

The New York City Board of Elections declared Monday that Queens Borough President Melinda Katz narrowly topped her challenger, Tiffany Cabán, in the Democratic primary to become the county’s next district attorney by a margin of just 60 votes.

But the fight for the party’s nomination will continue in Queens Supreme Court, where public defender Cabán plans to argue the BOE improperly excluded hundreds of ballots that could once again tip the scales in her favor.
