Co-Determination...

Image result for codetermination in german VW
Through a process called "codetermination," large German companies are required to elect half their board of directors by a vote of their employees, rather than of their shareholders. And it's "now the economic powerhouse of Europe.
Germany does not have the kind of widespread unemployment that plagues the rest of the continent, but has wage stagnation.
But similar policies in the United States have borne fruit. Studies of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), in which employees are encouraged to take an ownership stake in their own firms, find that they increase overall compensation, job satisfaction, productivity and profitability.
"Evidence suggests that combining employee ownership with increased employee participation may generate astounding returns on investment,"
Giving workers more control over their firms seems to help both them and the companies. Maybe U.S. companies could take the hint.

Trade...

Image result for XI and trump
Xi has sold himself as the champion of China’s global interests, to stand up to the West, and restore the country to its former glory. At home, Xi has promised the “Chinese Dream,” a prosperous future with boundless new opportunities.
He must avoid any setbacks inflicted by the west, keep China’s economy growing,  generate jobs and raising incomes. His aim at upgrading manufacturing and technology, to reach “Made in China 2025” will be delayed and so is military expansion.
U.S. tariffs will slow China’s economy at a time when it is already slowing and heavily indebted. It also may delay the desire to enhance their military ambition.

Billionaire Ken Langone told CNBC  he and his wife, Elaine, are helping give medical students free tuition as a way of sharing the American dream.

New York University announced earlier this month that it will offer free tuition for every student attending its medical school. The co-founder of Home Depot and chair of the board of trustees of the NYU Langone Medical Center, and his wife, donated $100 million to help fund the tuition.

Langone, a businessman and philanthropist, said that in the next 15 years there will be a critical shortage of doctors, particularly in primary care, pediatrics and OB-GYN. Langone added these are areas of medicine that don't pay well but are important.
