Failure again..?

The chance of Donald Trump being convicted in his impeachment trial in the Senate looks less likely as of Tuesday, when 45 Republicans attempted to dismiss the proceedings before they began.

With 55 senators still supporting the trial, the Republicans’ objections were not enough to derail it, but to get a conviction 67 senators need to vote in favor. In practice, this means a dozen Republicans who just voted to end the trial would need to cross the aisle and vote in favor of impeaching Trump, which seems unlikely.

Rand Paul of Kentucky, who led the effort to cancel the trial, argued it was not legitimate since Trump is no longer president, a claim the Democratic majority leader, Chuck Schumer, said had been “completely debunked by constitutional scholars from all across the political spectrum”.

Angry Rash...

An angry red rash being called “COVID arm” is a harmless but annoying response in some people who get the Moderna vaccine. Aside from sometimes being itchy, it doesn't appear to be dangerous and people who get it should not hesitate to get their second dose of the vaccine, doctors say.

There is no indication the reaction is anything but a topical – and brief – response as the body’s immune system goes to work, said Dr. Esther Freeman, director of global health dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“We want to reassure people that this is a known phenomenon. Having a big red splotch on your arm for a couple of days may not be fun but the reality is there's no need to panic and no reason not to get your second shot,” she said.

Freeman is the principal investigator in the global COVID-19 dermatological registry, which is collecting case reports of people experiencing COVID-19 responses. So far there are only 14 examples in the registry but she thinks there are more that haven’t been reported.

Fragile...

President Joe Biden and the new Democratic Congress were just sworn in, but the clock has already started on the 2022 midterm elections, when voters will decide if the president gets more than two years to advance his agenda with a friendly Congress.

Democrats have to defend a narrow 221-211 majority in the House (218 seats are needed for control) and the 50-50 Senate, where losing even a single seat will cost the party the chamber.

History is not on their side. Americans typically put a check on power, and the president's party has lost House seats in nearly every midterm since the 1930s. They typically suffer big losses in their first midterm.

"In 2020, House Republicans won 28 out of the 29 most competitive districts by highlighting the exact job-killing policies Joe Biden has enacted during his first week in office," said Michael McAdams, spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, the campaign arm of the House GOP. "If House Democrats thought 2020 was bad, they aren't the slightest bit prepared for what the 2022 cycle has in store."

Stripping...

The NYPD has released video showing suspects wanted for stealing and then stripping an unmarked police car in the Bronx — with one seemingly ready-handed with a power drill.

Four people wanted for stealing the Ford Taurus — assigned to the Bronx Special Victims Unit — from outside a supermarket at East 167th and Fox Streets at just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The car was found later a mile north, outside a laundromat near the Bronx River — up on cinderblocks and completely stripped and destroyed.

One of the quartet being sought was seen carrying a cigarette in her right hand — and a yellow-and-black power drill in her left.

Police said the car was “entered by unknown means” before being driven away and “disassembled.” It was not immediately clear if the suspects would have known it was a police car.
